Mumbai Suburban Railway to Get Major Upgrade: New Trains, Faster Services & Better Comfort

Mumbai: Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major transformation, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing new high-tech trains, improved infrastructure, and a significant increase in services. Speaking via video conference from Delhi, the minister revealed ambitious plans to enhance passenger comfort and reduce overcrowding on the city’s lifeline.
New-Design Trains for Enhanced Passenger Experience
A detailed plan for new-design suburban trains will be released soon.
These modern trains will feature:
- Better ventilation with higher oxygen content, improving air quality inside compartments.
- Advanced acceleration technology, reducing travel time.
- Improved suspension systems for smoother rides, reducing jerks and discomfort.
This upgrade aligns with the government’s broader vision of modernizing Mumbai’s railway network, ensuring better efficiency and safety.
Railway Infrastructure Boost: ₹16,400 Crore Projects Underway
The Railway Minister confirmed that projects worth ₹16,400 crore are in various stages of completion across Central Railway and Western Railway. These projects aim to decongest the network, improve efficiency, and boost the frequency of trains.
Reduced Time Gap Between Trains for Faster Commutes
One of the biggest upgrades will be reducing the time gap between two local trains:
- Currently: 180 seconds
- Upcoming Change: 150 seconds
- Future Target: 120 seconds
This will allow more trains to operate per hour, reducing waiting times and overcrowding during peak hours.
300 New Local Train Services to Be Introduced
To cater to Mumbai’s ever-growing commuter base, the Railways plans to introduce nearly 10% more train services, adding 300 new local train services in phases. This will be in addition to the existing 3,000 daily services, ensuring greater availability and convenience for passengers.
300 Kilometres of New Tracks for Mumbai’s Rail Network
To support the growing demand, the government is planning to lay 300 kilometres of new railway tracks in the city. This expansion will help in better train movement and connectivity across different parts of Mumbai.
Record Budget Allocation for Maharashtra’s Railways
These developments come after a massive ₹23,778 crore budgetary allocation for Maharashtra’s railway sector in the Union Budget 2025-26. This investment highlights the government’s focus on modernizing Mumbai’s transport system and addressing commuter challenges.
