Delhi Reports Maximum Number Of Rape, Murder Cases Among Metros In 2020

Among 19 major metropolitan cities in India, Chennai is ranked second in crime rate

.Mumbai: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)’s latest report shows that Delhi has the highest crime rate of 150.6% with 245,844 cases registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The data is from among 19 major metropolitan cities in the country.

The second highest city is Chennai with 88,388 cases and a 101.6% crime rate. The other eight cities that feature in the report are Ahmedabad (96.6 %), Mumbai (73.7%), Surat (64.3%), Pune (61.6%), Bengaluru (27.2%), Jaipur (23.4%), Hyderabad (20.6%) and Kolkata (10.9%).  Also Read: NCRB Data Shows That Crime Against Women Increased The Most In West Bengal And Odisha

For calculating the rate, the number of crimes occurring per hundred thousand population was used. Whereas, the population statistics of the 19 metro cities were as per the 2011 Census.

The report even showed that India recorded a jump of 28 per cent in the registration of criminal cases in 2020. It is expected that this rise can be due to violations of pandemic-induced restrictions in the country. The cases registered under Disobedience to order duly promulgated by Public Servant (Section 188 IPC) from 29,469 to 6,12,179 in 2020. These sections were invoked for pandemic-related violations.

In 2020, the registration of offences under the Indian Penal Code rose by 31.9 per cent while cases under the Special and Local Laws (SLL) have increased by 21.6 per cent. The report also states that registration of traditional crime dropped by 2 lakhs last year.
