New Parliament Building’s Cost To Rise By ₹200 Crore To ₹1,200 Crore: Report

Mumbai: The new Parliament building’s cost may reportedly increase by over ₹200 crore due to higher expenditure on steel and electronics.

The Central Public Works Department is expected to get Lok Sabha Secretariat’s approval for the enhancement, which will take the total cost to around ₹1,200 crores, PTI reported citing sources.

The estimated project cost of the new Parliament building may increase by over Rs 200 crore due to higher expenditure on steel, electronics and other works, news agency PTI reported on Thursday, quoting sources.

The report further revealed that the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is expected to get the approval of the Lok Sabha Secretariat for the enhancement.

Earlier this month, the CPWD, the nodal agency for the construction of the new Parliament building, had sought in-principle approval of the LS Secretariat for cost escalation, sources told news agency PTI.

“The Lok Sabha Secretariat had received an in-principle proposal from the CPWD to increase the cost of construction of the new Parliament building earlier this month and it is likely to be approved,” PTI quoted a source as saying.

According to PTI sources, the project is expected to cost around Rs 1,200 crore after the expansion.

The project for the construction of the new Parliament building was awarded to Tata Projects in 2020 for Rs 971 crore. The government had set an October 2022 deadline for the building and aimed to hold this year’s winter session in the new building.

PTI sources revealed that the CPWD has given reasons behind the expected increase in cost which includes the higher cost of steel as the building is now built as per seismic zone 5 norms.

The CPWD said the cost of electronics is also expected to increase as provisions are also being made for modern audio-visual systems including tablets on the tables of MPs in both the Houses of Parliament.
