Nirbahaya’s Mother Welcome Delhi Govt Decision To Recommed Rejection Of Convict’s Mercy Petition
Mumbai: The 2012 Delhi rape and murder victim’s mother welcomed the Delhi government’s decision to dismiss the mercy petition filed by a convict in the case, a report said.
“I welcome Delhi government’s decision to recommend rejection of mercy petition of one of the convicts in the case. I hope soon the accused will be hanged to death soon,” said Asha Devi, the mother of 2012 Delhi rape and murder victim, as quoted by news agency ANI on Monday.
Reacting to the recent Telangana rape and murder case, Asha Devi asked the administration to consider why such incidents happen again. “The rape and murder of a female veterinarian were barbaric. Unlike us who had to fight for 7 years, she should get justice soon. The administration should reflect on why such incidents re-occur,” Asha Devi said, according to news agency ANI.
Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain has sent a file to Lt. Governor Anil Baijal with recommendations of the Arvind Kejriwal government in the case.
Vinay Sharma, one of the convicts sentenced to death for gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old paramilitary student, had filed a mercy petition before President Ram Nath Kovind.
“This is the most heinous crime of extreme cruelty committed by the applicant (Vinay Sharma). This is a case where others should be given exemplary punishment for avoiding such atrocities, ”a source told Jain in a file note.
The Delhi home minister also said, “There is no merit in mercy petition, strongly recommended for rejection”.
The paramilitary student was raped by six persons inside a moving bus in South Delhi on the night of 16–17 December 2012 and severely assaulted before being thrown onto the road.
She died on December 29, 2012, at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, where she was airlifted from Delhi for treatment.
Ram Singh, one of the accused, had hanged himself and another accused, a juvenile, was convicted of rape and murder and given a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment in a correctional facility.
The fourth death row convict, Akshay Kumar Singh (33), had not filed a review plea in the apex court.
