Nirbhaya Gangrape Convicts Won’t Be Hanged On Jan 22: Delhi Govt

Mumbai: In a massive development in the Nirbhaya case, the Delhi government led by Arvind Kejriwal said that the hanging of the four convicts of Nirbhaya gang rape and murder would not take place on January 22 as a mercy petition has been filed.

News agency ANI reported, lawyer Rahul Mehra, the permanent advocate for the Tihar jail authorities, claimed that the execution of the convicts of the 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case would certainly not come on January 22. He further said that the fate of a death sentence comes. It will be finalized only after the President rejects his mercy petition.

Mehra said that the hanging could be done only 14 days after the mercy petition was dismissed. He said that the officers were bound by the rule which stated that 14 days notice should be given to the convicts after the mercy petition is dismissed.

The new plea has been filed a day after the Supreme Court refused to stay the execution of two of the four in a curative petition against his sentence on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old paramilitary student was raped and brutally assaulted by six men in December 2012 in a moving bus. After the brutal attack, the victim died on December 29 in a Singapore hospital.
