Nirbhaya’s Parents Slams Delhi Government Over Delaying In Hanging the Rape Convicts

Mumbai: Nirbhaya’s parents have accused the Delhi government of delaying justice for their daughter, who was brutally gang-raped in the heart of the national capital on the night of 16-17 December 2012.

A Delhi court issued a death warrant against the four accused on 7 January and their execution was scheduled to take place on 22 January. However, mercy petitions filed by the convicts delayed the process and the Delhi government informed the Delhi High Court that the hanging could not take place. A mercy petition was pending hearing on 22 January.

“The Delhi government was asleep until we started fighting. For two years he did not tell the jail authorities that he too had rights and that he should keep an eye on the prisoners. Today, we are in a phase when the culprits will be hanged soon. But they are playing the game on Nirbhaya’s death, ”said Nirbhaya’s father.

He also accused Manish Sisodia and said that the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi is using Nirbhaya for personal gain. “Sisodia is using my daughter’s death for her benefit. He withheld the death warrant for his benefit. What Sisodia said about giving the Delhi government two days of the police force to see the results was a very embarrassing statement. ”

“Why does Kejriwal talk about the safety of women? Now the central government has no role in this matter. It is now the responsibility of the Delhi government and Kejriwal is playing the game. I want to appeal to the people and ask them – why is justice delayed for Nirbhaya? If no decision is taken in this regard till the election, Kejriwal will be responsible for it, ”said Nirbhaya’s father.

In May 2017, four convicts appealed against the death penalty awarded by the Delhi High Court. In October 2019, for the first time, Tihar Jail issued a notice to the four death sentence convicts to file mercy petitions before the President or they would ask for a death warrant from the court. It was Nirbhaya’s mother, who pleaded with the court in November 2018 as to why the death warrant was not being issued.

Prakash Javdekar is correct when he said ‘now the hanging cannot happen on January 22. If they had been given notice as per rule soon after the death sentence was announced in 2017, the accused would have been hanged by now. The AAP government is responsible for the delay of injustice’. The Tihar jail administration is under Arvind Kejriwal. They did not issue a notice to convicts when the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal way back in May 2017. They sat on it for two-and-a-half years,” said Nirbhaya’s mother.
