No Country Attempted Lockdown With Huge Migrant Labor Without A Migration System, Rationed: Rahul Gandhi

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP-led government for the way the lockdown was implemented and said that such a large number of migrant labourers have made this effort without providing their lives and food.

He said that the Congress needed to act as a watchdog to ensure that the poor and weaker sections were comprehensively protected in view of the crisis created by the coronavirus.

Addressing a virtual meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) here to discuss issues related to COVID-19, Gandhi said that India must fight the global epidemic with a country-specific strategy and prepare it will require “economic catastrophe”.

Gandhi said, “We have looked at COVID for two months since February and have talked to experts. No country in the world has attempted a lockdown with huge migrant labour without arranging for their stay, food and ration and pushing them back home,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi’s comments in the meeting were tweeted by party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala. He said that Congress workers need to help people, soften the blow and help them in every way possible.

Gandhi said that coronavirus specifically attacks older persons, lung disease, diabetes, heart disease and it makes them the most vulnerable.

The government announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown on March 24 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
