No Issue With Interfaith Marriages, But With Deception: Maha CM

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday stated that while there is nothing wrong with interfaith marriages, steps must be taken to prevent matrimonial alliances formed through fraud and false identity.
Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis referred to observations made by the Supreme Court and Kerala High Court regarding the reality of “love jihad.” His comments were in response to queries about the state government’s decision to establish a committee to examine the legal aspects of a new law against forced conversions and cases of “love jihad.”
“Love jihad” is a term used by right-wing activists to allege a conspiracy wherein Muslim men convert Hindu women to Islam through marriage.
“It is a reality, and in Maharashtra, incidents of individuals being duped into marriage and later abandoned after having children are on the rise,” Fadnavis stated.
He emphasized that interfaith marriages in themselves are not problematic, but cases involving fraudulent identities and deceitful intent need to be addressed seriously.
To tackle such issues, the Maharashtra government has issued a Government Resolution (GR) forming a committee led by the state’s Director General of Police (DGP). The committee will examine complaints related to “love jihad” and forced conversions, study legal frameworks in other states, and propose legislation to prevent such instances.
The government’s move aims to safeguard individuals from fraudulent matrimonial alliances while ensuring legal clarity on the matter
