Not Absconding: Param Bir Singh Tells SC, Gets Protection From Arrest

Multiple cases of extortion have been filed against Param Bir Singh and he was untraceable for several months

Mumbai: Supreme Court on Monday granted protection to former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh from arrest and has asked him to join the investigation into extortion charges against him.

Singh has agreed to appear before CBI within the next 48 hours.

“It should not appear to the court that I am afraid. I have full faith in the system. I am ready to appear before a CBI Court. I am being hounded. There are six cases against me. I am suffering. Please grant me protection. I was the seniormost police officer and I am not going to run anywhere,” Mr Singh pleaded.

Singh has been missing since October. However, he has said that he is in the country and not absconding.

Param Bir Singh’s advocate told the court that he has been hiding as he faces threat to his life from Mumbai police.

Meanwhile, the apex court has also agreed to hear Param Bir Singh’s plea. The court issued notice to the Maharashtra government and CBI & posts the matter for hearing on December 6.

Multiple cases of extortion have been filed against Param Bir Singh. In March this year, he was removed as Mumbai Police Commissioner and shifted to the Home Guard department amid the Ambani bomb scare case.

However, he went on leave in May and was untraceable for several months. On November 17, a Mumbai court said Mr Singh could be declared an “absconder”, which means he would become a fugitive.
