Only Those Aged 45+ To Get Vaccine In Maharashtra For Now: State minister

Mumbai: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Tuesday that the state government is considering temporarily discontinuing the COVID vaccination campaign for the 18-44 age group due to lack of vaccine doses.

He said that the vaccine supplements currently available with the state would be used to vaccinate people 45 and older as administering the second jab of these people is a priority.

Speaking to media persons, Rajesh Tope said, “There is a shortage of vaccines, so we are considering a temporary vaccination campaign for the 18-44 age group. There are 2.75 lakh vaccine doses left for this group, that will be used for 45 years and above the group now. Administering the second dose is a priority.”

He said, “The Mucormycosis patients will be treated free of cost under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. So far more than 2,000 cases have been reported from this infection in the state and 8 people have died. We are making special wards for these patients.”

The state health minister said that a decision on the extension of the lockout in Maharashtra will be taken at a cabinet meeting tomorrow.

In Maharashtra, the third phase of the vaccination campaign was nominated on 1 May, even after the shortage of vaccine to mark the celebration of Maharashtra Day.

Maharashtra has 593150 active COVID-19 cases. 24,920 new cases and 549 related deaths were reported in the state over the last 24 hours.
