Operation Sindoor Forced Pakistan to Seek Ceasefire, Says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Mumbai: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday declared that Operation Sindoor, India’s decisive military action against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), was a natural continuation of the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes — and was executed so effectively that it compelled Pakistan to request a ceasefire.
Speaking at the International Yoga Day celebrations organised by the Indian Army in Udhampur — the headquarters of the Army’s Northern Command — Singh underlined India’s unwavering resolve to fight terrorism and uphold its sovereignty.
“It was executed in such a way that Pakistan requested for a ceasefire, and only then have we put a pause to the operation. As I have said earlier, Operation Sindoor is not over yet. India is fully prepared to take all kinds of action against terrorism,” the minister said.
A Calculated and Calibrated Response
India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7, in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead. The Indian armed forces targeted terror and military installations across Pakistan and PoK in a four-day military confrontation that involved fighter jets, drones, missiles, long-range precision weapons, and heavy artillery.
The military offensive was paused on May 10, after what sources called “mutual understanding” between the two sides. However, Singh made it clear that the operation remains active in intent and preparedness.
He further added that the precision and balance demonstrated by the armed forces during Operation Sindoor were a testament to their mental and physical resilience — qualities deeply rooted in the discipline of yoga.
A Clear Message to Pakistan
Singh reiterated that Operation Sindoor served as a strong warning to Pakistan that India will no longer tolerate cross-border terrorism.
“Pakistan wants to weaken India from within, but it should never forget the sacrifices made by brave soldiers like Major Somnath Sharma and Brigadier Mohammad Usman,” he said, referring to two of India’s greatest war heroes who fought during the 1947-48 India-Pakistan conflict. Sharma was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, and Usman, the Maha Vir Chakra.
Senior Military Leadership in Attendance
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma were also present during the Yoga Day event, reinforcing the significance of Udhampur as the strategic centre of India’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir.
India’s Message to the World
With Operation Sindoor, India has once again demonstrated its capacity for measured retaliation, strategic restraint, and military might, all underpinned by a commitment to national unity and peace.
Singh concluded by reiterating that while India seeks peace, it will not hesitate to respond with force when provoked.
