Opposition Boycotts 5-Party Meet Called By Govt Over Suspension Of 12 MPs

Mumbai: The Opposition on Monday rejected the government’s invitation for talks to the leaders of the five parties whose 12 MPs have been suspended from the Rajya Sabha.

The decision was taken following a meeting of all opposition parties this morning.

Talking to the media, Sanjay Raut said, “We will not attend the meeting called by the government. We will demand the resignation of the Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra and the revocation of 12 opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha. We will not allow both the houses to function.”

Earlier in the day, during the meeting of floor leaders of both the houses, the opposition leaders discussed the strategy to cancel the suspension of 12 opposition MPs over the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and the demand for the resignation of Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Friday with the announcement of the Chairman’s meeting at 11 am on Monday, citing the decision taken in the meeting with the government and opposition leaders held earlier in the day.

In the past, the House faced disruptions on various issues, most notably over the suspension of 12 MPs.

In a move that angered the opposition and set the stage for acrimonious exchanges, a dozen members of opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha were suspended from the winter session on the first day of Monday following a resolution moved by the government. . ,

The members were suspended for alleged unruly conduct towards the end of the monsoon session in August when marshals were called after Opposition members stormed the Well of the House during the passage of the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021.
