Over 43% Of Suicides Over Unemployment Reported In Delhi, Mumbai: NCRB

Mumbai: The latest National Crime Records Bureau data has shown that over 43% of suicides due to unemployment in 2021 were reported in Delhi and Mumbai.

The latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that there were a total of 1,012 suicides due to unemployment in India, of which more than 40% were reported from Delhi and Mumbai.

According to last year’s data, 283 people in Delhi, 156 in Mumbai, 111 in Chennai and 96 in Bengaluru committed suicide last year due to unemployment. Many of whom were between the ages of 18 and 30. Similarly, there were 79 suicides in Pune and 74 in Bengaluru in 2021 over career issues.

According to the data, there were 2,292 and 1,436 suicides in Bengaluru and Mumbai last year, an increase of 4.4 per cent and 12 per cent.

These four cities together saw 35.5% of the total suicides in 53 mega-cities last year.

Also, Mumbai tops the list of suicides due to poverty, with 44 deaths in 2021, followed by Bengaluru (39) and Nashik (26).

The number of suicides in 53 major cities shows an increasing trend from 2018 to 2021. There were around 21,408 suicides in 2018. That number rose by 4.6% to 22,390 in 2019. The number rose 6.5% to 23,855 in 2020, rising to 23,855. 25,891 in 2021.

The data points to year-wise incidents in cities, percentage share to all of India, rate of suicides and percentage change during 2018-2021, the NCRB said.
