Pak Court Gives Death Sentence To Musharraf In High Treason Case

Mumbai: For the first time in the history of Pakistan, a special court on Tuesday handed a death sentence to former military dictator Pervez Musharraf in a high treason case.

The court of Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth, Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Nazar Akbar and Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Shahid Karim took up the high treason case against Musharraf today.

Earlier this month, the special court had said that it would pass judgment in the case on 17 December. On November 19, the court ended the trial proceedings against Musharraf on November 3, 2007, for declaring a state emergency.

The court was scheduled to announce the verdict on 28 November based on available records, but the Islamabad High Court stayed the declaration of the verdict after the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan filed a petition against the declaration.

Since 2016, Musharraf has been living in an exile in Dubai for “medical demands” and has not returned to the country since. He is wanted by the authorities in relation to the case.

The former leader’s high treason case has been pending since December 2013 when he was booked in the case. He was charged on 31 March 2014 and the prosecution presented full evidence before the special court in September of the same year.

However, due to litigation in appellate forums, Musharraf’s trial stayed and he left Pakistan in March 2016 to “seek medical treatment.”

The former President of Pakistan has then declared an absconder as he failed to appear in court despite repeated summons and the court issued a directive to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to arrest him.
