Pakistan Seeks ‘Peace with Dignity’ Amid Rising Indo-Pak Tensions After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Mumbai : Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has stated that Islamabad is not seeking conflict with New Delhi.

In an interview with Newsweek, Ambassador Sheikh said, “We do not want to fight, particularly with a bigger country.” While emphasizing that peace aligns with Pakistan’s national interest, he cautioned that this desire should not be seen as a sign of weakness. “We want peace. It suits our economic agenda; it suits our nationhood. But we want peace with dignity. If conflict is imposed, Pakistan will die with dignity rather than survive with indignity,” he added.

Reiterating Pakistan’s longstanding position on Kashmir, Sheikh referred to the region as the “world’s highest nuclear flashpoint” and urged the international community to take notice. He appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to mediate, suggesting that resolving the Kashmir dispute could cement his legacy as a global peacemaker.

The remarks come in the aftermath of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them Hindu tourists. While India has not officially named Pakistan as responsible, intelligence inputs indicate the involvement of Pakistani nationals.

In response, the United States has reiterated its support for India’s right to defend itself. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth told his Indian counterpart that “the U.S. stands in solidarity with India” and supports its fight against terrorism. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also engaged with Indian officials, calling for restraint while affirming backing for India’s anti-terror efforts.

President Trump, however, has taken a more hands-off stance. “Pakistan and India will get it figured out one way or the other, I’m sure of that,” he said in a brief statement.

The situation remains tense, with regional and global stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
