Pakistan Targets Jammu With Loitering Munitions, Indian Air Defence Gunsfiring Back

Mumbai: Escalating the already tense situation along the India-Pakistan border, Pakistan launched loitering munitions targeting Jammu on Thursday, prompting a swift response from Indian Air Defence systems. As Indian forces fired back, complete blackouts were enforced across several areas of the Jammu Division, including Kishtwar, Akhnoor, and Jammu city, where sirens continue to wail through the day.

The latest hostilities come just a day after India conducted precision strikes under Operation SINDOOR in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. In these strikes, India targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), carefully avoiding civilian and military installations.

At a press briefing Thursday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reaffirmed India’s restrained approach, emphasizing that the original escalation was initiated by Pakistan on April 22. “We are only responding to the original escalations… our response has been targeted, precise, controlled, and measured. No military targets have been selected. Only terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan has been hit,” Misri stated.

He added that while India does not seek to escalate the situation, Pakistan’s continued aggression — including Thursday’s attacks — will be “responded to and is being responded to appropriately.”

Meanwhile, sources confirmed that the government informed an all-party meeting on Thursday that India’s precision strikes early Wednesday neutralized over 100 terrorists. The Defence Ministry also disclosed that, during the night of May 7, Pakistan attempted to hit numerous Indian military installations in Northern and Western India — including key airbases in Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Bhuj — using drones and missiles. All incoming threats were intercepted and neutralized by India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems.

Despite India’s efforts to keep the conflict limited and proportional, Pakistan has intensified cross-border firing using mortars and heavy artillery across several Line of Control sectors. Sixteen Indian civilians, including women and children, have reportedly been killed in the shelling over the past 24 hours.

The situation along the border remains volatile, with both militaries maintaining heightened alert.
