Pakistan To Attend Covid-19 Video Conference By SAARC, Accepts PM Modi’s Call

Mumbai: Pakistan on Friday confirmed that it will participate in a video conference of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Confirming Pakistan’s participation, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Aisha Farooqui told her official Twitter to handle and said that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s special assistant on health Zafar Mirza will attend the conference, “coronavirus requires coordinated efforts at the global and regional level”.

“The threat of COVID-19 requires coordinated efforts at the global and regional level. We have communicated that SAPM on Health will be available to participate in the video conference of SAARC member countries on the issue,” she tweeted.

This comes after PM Modi called upon the leaders of the SAARC nations to come together to chalk out a joint strategy to tackle the coronavirus pandemic that has killed over 5,000 people and infected more than 1,40,000 worldwide.

SAARC is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Many leaders of these SAARC countries have supported PM Modi’s proposal and confirmed his participation in the conference.

Pakistan authorities confirmed on Friday that 28 people across the country were tested positive with the deadly coronavirus. The government has intensified its efforts to prevent a rapidly spreading epidemic.

Meanwhile, its outbreak is very bad in India with a total number of 82 cases and two virus-related deaths. India has suspended visas to all foreign nationals till 14 April and has begun the process of bringing back Indian nationals stranded in other virus-affected countries.
