Panghal, Manish Exempted From Senior Boxing Nationals

Mumbai: World Championship medalists Amit Panghal and Manish Kaushik have been exempted from participating in the Senior National Boxing Championship to be held in Shimla from October 4 to 10.

Pangal (52 kg) who became the first Indian male boxer to claim a silver medal at the World Championships, while Kaushik (63 kg) returned with a bronze medal at the event held in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Saturday.

“We are not playing national,” Panghal told to PTI after returning from the World Championship on Monday.

“The team for the World Championship is not playing in the Nationals. Since it was a high-level tournament, we have been rested,” he said.

High-performance director Santiago Niwa confirmed this, saying that all boxers returning from the World Championship would be allowed to leave the nationals.

“Ashish Kumar (75 kg) is the only boxer to play at the national level. No other boxer from the World Championship team will play at the national level,” he said.

Asian Championship silver medalist Ashish lost in the tournament to Tuhoterebke Tanglatihan of China by a margin of 2-3 in the second round.

An eight-member team led by Panghal represented India at the World Championships.
