Pant Tests Positive For Delta Variant Of COVID-19, Had Attended Euro Match: Reports

Mumbai: Team India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant tested positive for the Delta variant of COVID-19 in England during the 20-day break, a BCCI source confirmed to ESPNcricinfo.

He has been in isolation for the past eight days and won’t be joining the bio-bubble in Durham, reports added.

“He is in quarantine at an acquaintance’s place and will not travel to Durham with the team on Thursday,” he said, adding that the 23-year-old would join the team.

The development came after BCCI secretary Jay Shah sent an e-mail to the Indian contingent warning about the rising cases of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom.

The players were given a break after the World Test Championship against New Zealand, which the team lost last month.

“Yes, a player has tested positive but he is in isolation for the last eight days. He was not staying in any hotel with the team, so no other player has been affected,” BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla told news agency PTI.

“No other player has tested positive so far. You should also know that our secretary Jay Shah has written a letter to all the players to maintain the protocol.”

It is understood that Pant was suffering from the delta variant due to which the number of cases in England is increasing. He was seen attending a Euro Championship match last month and also posted pictures on his social media accounts.

The India-England showdown marks the beginning of the second cycle of the World Test Championship. Recently, the England team too was hit by the virus and was forced to field ab altogether different XI in a limited-overs match against Pakistan.
