Pegasus Used As A Weapon By Narendra Modi Govt: Rahul Gandhi

Mumbai: The opposition on Wednesday attacked the Center over the Pegasus snooping controversy, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have attacked the soul of Indian democracy.

Seeking to discuss the matter in Parliament, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi after a meeting of like-minded opposition parties here sought to know from the government whether it has used Israeli firm NSO to spy on its own people.

“We want to ask just one question. Has the Government of India bought Pegasus? Yes or No? Did the government use Pegasus weapons against its own people? We have been told clearly by the government that no discussion will take place on Pegasus in the House,” Rahul told reporters here.

He alleged that Pegasus software was used as a “weapon” by the Modi government to target political leaders like him, Supreme Court judges, journalists and activists.

“I want to know from the youth of the country – Narendra Modi Ji has sent a weapon in your phone. This weapon has been used against me, Supreme Court, many leaders, people in the press and activists. So why should it not be discussed in the House?

“It is being said about us that we’re disturbing Parliament proceedings. We are not disturbing the House. We just want to fulfil our duties. This weapon (Pegasus) has been used against India. It should be used against terrorists and anti-nationals,” Rahul said, defending the disruption of Parliament proceedings by the opposition parties.

“We want to know from Narendra Modi and Amit Shah – why you used this weapon (Pegasus spyware) against India’s democratic institutions? For us, Pegasus is a matter related to nationalism and treason. This weapon has been used against democracy. For me, it’s not a matter of privacy. I see it as an anti-national act. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah Ji have attacked the soul of India’s democracy,” he added.

Media reports claimed that Pegasus spyware was used to infiltrate phones and monitor political leaders, government officials and journalists, sparking massive political controversy in the country and other parts of the world.
