Pilgrims Need To Carry Passports While Travelling To Kartarpur: MEA

Mumbai: Two days before the biggest event in the Kartarpur Corridor, India said that pilgrims visiting the Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Kartarpur, Punjab, Pakistan, will need to carry passports.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said the reports emanating from Pakistan are “conflicting”.

“Sometimes they say a passport is required, other times it is not required. We think there are differences between his Foreign Office and other agencies. According to news agency ANI, Kumar has a consent letter (MoU), it has not been changed and a passport is needed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said last week that Indian pilgrims would not require a passport, just a “valid identity proof”. But according to reports in Pakistani media on Thursday, a spokesman for the media wing of the Pakistani army was quoted as saying that the Kartarpur pilgrims. Entry will be allowed under “Permit on passport-based identification”.

India and Pakistan have signed an agreement for the construction of the Kartarpur Corridor this year, marking the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. The corridor is intended to facilitate the visa-free movement of Indian pilgrims to Kartarpur, which was established in 1522 by Guru Nanak.
