PM Modi Lambasts Oppn Of Playing ‘Political Games’ Over CAA, Says Law Not To Snatch Citizenship

The Prime Minister said that the Center has made provisions to protect the identity, demography and culture of the Northeast

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed opposition over Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens over political games and said Pakistan will now have to answer why it committed atrocities on minorities.

“I repeat again, the Citizenship Act is not meant to revoke one’s citizenship, but to grant citizenship. After independence, Mahatma Gandhi and other big leaders of the time believed that India should Pakistan’s religious minorities should be given citizenship to persecute, ”he said while addressing the people at Belur Math.

He said, “You are understanding this very clearly. But political gamegoers deliberately refuse to understand. People are being misled at the CAA,” he said.

Attacking Pakistan for atrocities on minorities, Modi said: “The youth of India are raising their voice against the atrocities on minorities in Pakistan. If this issue had not been raised, the world would not have known about it Happening. This is the result of our country. Pakistan will now have to answer why it has persecuted minorities in the last 70 years. ”

The Prime Minister said that the Center has made provisions to protect the identity, demography and culture of the Northeast.

“The North-East is our pride. The CAA will not have any adverse impact on their demographics, identity and culture. The Central Government has made provisions for this,” he said.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India on December 31, 2014.
