Mumbai:  In a recent development, PM Narendra Modi and China President Xi Jinping held a wide range of discussions over the unbalanced trade that exists between the two countries and ways to counter radicalization and terrorism.

Addressing a press conference here, Foreign Secretary Vijay K Gokhale said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have spent about five hours more discussion. Most of it was one to one.”

The discussions between the two leaders lasted for more than 150 minutes.

“The discussions were very open and cordial. This was the quality time the two leaders spent on each other together.

The rest of the two delegations were actually at a different dinner venue. The two leaders discussed in detail the respective national philosophy on governance priorities. The Prime Minister pointed out that recently after being elected for a second term, he had obtained a new mandate for economic development, ”said Gokhale.

The Chinese President accepted the mandate given to the Prime Minister, stating that “he intends to work closely with the PM on all issues during the next four and a half years”.

Gokhale said, “They also spoke about other developmental priorities. In particular, there was some discussion on trade-related and economic issues and how to increase trade volume and trade value. There is also the issue of the trade deficit included.”

“Some of the other topics include the challenges facing both countries due to terrorism. The gratitude is that both countries are very complex, they are very diverse. Both leaders said that these were large countries.

He said that fundamentalism is a major concern for both, and the two will work together not to allow radicalization and terrorism to affect the fabric of our multicultural, multiracial societies.
