PM’s 20 Lakh Crore Package A “Cruel Joke on Country”: Sonia Gandhi

Mumbai: Congress President Sonia Gandhi lashed out at the government saying the government abandoned any pretense of being democratic and has embarked on a wild adventure of so-called reforms including a grand clearance sale of public sector units, in an online meeting of Opposition parties.

Every economist of repute had advised the immediate need for a massive fiscal stimulus. PM’s announcement of a grand Rs 20 lakh cr package and FM spelling out its details over the next 5 days, have turned out to be a “cruel joke”, she added.

Talking about the plight of migrants Gandhi said that the defining image of the pandemic has been the lakhs of migrant workers, many with children, walking hundreds of kilometers, without money, food or medicines, desperate to reach their home states.

Apart from migrants, the PM has cruelly ignored the 13 crore families in the bottom half of the population including Tenant farmers, landless agricultural workers, retrenched workers, and shopkeepers.

“That the present government has no solutions is worrying, but that having no empathy or compassion for the poor and Vulnerable is heartbreaking,” Gandhi said.

Mamata Banerjee, Uddhav Thackeray, HD Deve Gowda were the prominent leaders to join the online meeting, while leaders as Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati remained absent.
