Prazinos Seeks To Make India’s Food Habit Healthier And More Sustainable

While conventional farming is known for its excessive dependence on synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides, and other products, organic farming focuses more on sustainable ways of producing crops. At the first glance, it might seem that organic foods cost less due to the absence of chemicals and synthetic products. However, the reality is quite different from the expectations. In general, organic food items can cost from 20% to 100% more than their conventional counterparts. Prazinos is a food-tech company that is on a mission to make organic food items more affordable and accessible to the common Indian population.

India has long been an agrarian economy with more than 50% of India’s workforce associated with agriculture. India’s farmers shifted from age-old organic farming techniques to modern-day chemicals-intensive farming during the 1960s, thanks to the Green Revolution. In conventional farming, chemicals and synthetic pesticides reduce the cost of production significantly by increasing production speed and efficiency. Therefore, despite being more nutrient-dense than inorganic options, organic fruits and vegetables grow slow and remain smaller than conventional ones. The loss of crops is also significantly high in the cases of organic food items. Additionally, organic foods also have low shelf life due to the absence of antibiotics. All of these contribute to the low supply and high price of organic food items. Prazinos seeks to introduce technological advancement to the realm of organic farming to bring down the price of these items. The company wants organic foods to be a part of every Indian household so that every Indian can follow a healthy food regime.

Shedding light on the vision of Prazinos, the Company Founder says, “While everyone is already aware of the health benefits of organic foods, not every Indian can afford them due to their expensive nature. In India, organic foods items are still out of the reach of the lower-middle-class people who contribute to the majority of the country’s population. Prazinos will take organic foods to the doorsteps of everyone. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, Prazinos envisions making organic food items a part of people’s regular life.”

Organic farming has still not gained momentum in India. According to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, about 2.78 million hectares of farmland were under organic cultivation as of March 2020, which is just 2% of the country’s 140.1 million hectares of net sown area. In this situation, Prazinos will encourage and popularize organic farming and organic food consumption in India. The company has already started its operation in the state of Karnataka and hopes to expand its business on a pan-Indian scale over the next 5 years. Their excellent efforts have earned them the GTF Bangalore Business Award 2018 for information and technology. Now, Prazinos is aiming at making India’s grocery budget healthier and more cost-effective.
