Mumbai: The principal of a private school in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, has been accused of forcing 80 Class 10 girls to remove their shirts for writing messages on them, sparking outrage and prompting an official inquiry, an official said on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Friday at a well-known school in Digwadih, under the Jorapokhar police station. Parents alleged that after completing their examination, the students were celebrating ‘Pen Day’ by writing messages on each other’s shirts.

The principal reportedly objected to the activity and ordered the girls to remove their shirts, despite their apologies. The students were then allegedly sent home wearing only their blazers.

Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra stated, “Several guardians lodged complaints against the principal, and we also spoke with some of the affected students. The administration is taking the matter seriously.”

A committee comprising the sub-divisional magistrate, district education officer, district social welfare officer, and sub-divisional police officer has been formed to investigate the incident.

The DC assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the probe committee’s findings.

Jharia MLA Ragini Singh accompanied the parents when they lodged their complaints with the DC and described the incident as “shameful and unfortunate.”
