Priyanka Creates History, Becomes 1st Indian To Win CWG Silver In 10,000m Race Walk

Mumbai: Athlete Priyanka Goswami has created history by becoming the first-ever Indian to win a silver medal in a 10,000m race walk at CWG. The 26-year-old clocked 43:38.83 to finish second in the women’s 10,000m race walk final at CWG 2022.

Priyanka posted her personal best, covering the marathon distance in 49 minutes and 38 seconds, and was India’s third medalist in track and field at the CWG 2022 along with Murali Sreeshankar (silver in long jump) and Tejaswin Shankar (bronze in high jump) as India’s third medallist in track and field at CWG 2022.

Priyanka took the lead very early in the first blow of the whistle and retained the first position after the 4000 m (4 km) mark. With six more to go, she was left behind Australia’s Jemima Montag and Kenya’s Emily Wamusi Angie.

After finishing 8km, Priyanka had slipped to third place, but the 26-year-old had the advantage after covering a distance of 2km in the last minute. Montag won the gold medal with a timing of 42:38, while Priyanka defeated NGI to finish second. Another Indian Bhawna Jat finished eighth in the competition.

With this, Priyanka became the first Indian woman to win a racewalking medal. It also makes her only the second racewalked to win a medal at CWG. Before her, Harminder Singh had clinched a bronze medal back in the 2019 Games in the 20m racewalk.
