Punjab Imposes Night Curfew From 10 pm To 5 am, Shuts Schools Amid COVID19 Surge

Mumbai: The Punjab government has imposed a night curfew in municipal areas with certain exceptions, starting January 4, from 10 pm to 5 am amid rising COVID-19 cases.

The state government has also shut all educational institutions including schools, colleges, universities, and coaching centers.

The order issued by the state government states that bars, cinema halls, malls, restaurants, and spas can continue to operate at 50 per cent capacity, provided the employees are fully vaccinated.

However, for now, the gymnasiums will have to be closed.

In addition, only fully immunized employees will be allowed to work in government and private offices.

Night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am and other COVID-19 restrictions have been imposed till January 15.

Wearing masks is mandatory and the public has also been advised to follow a social distance of at least 6 feet.

“Movement of individuals for all the non-essential activities shall remain prohibited between 10 pm to 5 am within municipal limits of all the cities and towns of Punjab. The district authorities are accordingly asked to issue prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC and ensure strict compliance,” the order issued by the Department of Home Affairs and Justice of the Punjab government read.

All educational institutions except medical and nursing colleges have been ordered to remain closed. Online teaching is allowed.

In the state also, AC buses will now run at 50 percent capacity.

If deemed necessary, district authorities have been allowed to impose additional restrictions.

The order comes a day after Punjab reported 419 fresh cases of COVID-19 and one death. The number of infected in the state has increased to 6,05,922 with 16,651 deaths.

Punjab has been registering an increase in the number of cases since the last few days. The number of cured COVID-19 cases in the state now stands at 5,87,530.
