Rahul Asks Cong Workers To Help Those Affected By Assam Floods

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has urged all his party workers and leaders in Assam to provide assistance in relief operations in the recent floods and landslides that have taken place in the state.

“Lakhs of people are affected by severe flooding in Assam. I urge Congress workers and leaders to continue extending all possible assistance to the rescue and relief operations,” he said in a tweet.

Over seven lakh people in 29 districts have been affected by the Assam floods, in which nine people have died.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority said on Thursday, “So far 7,17,046 people have been affected in 29 districts due to the flood situation in the state. Nine people have died in floods and landslides so far.”

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said that at present 1413 villages are submerged in water and Nagaon is the worst affected district where 2.88 lakh people are in the grip of the disaster. Around 1.2 lakh people were affected in Cachar and over 1.07 lakh in Hojai.

A part of the road connecting Kampur-Kathiatali in the Nagaon district was washed away in the floods. Many parts of the state are in the grip of floods.

Assam Rifles, National Disaster Response Force and Indian Army are carrying out rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas of the state. In addition, the Assam cabinet decided to start an emergency flight service between Silchar and Guwahati at the rate of Rs 3000 each to mitigate the communication crisis due to floods and landslides in Dima Hasao and Barak Valley.

In view of the flood situation, the Cachar district administration has closed all educational institutions (government and private) and non-essential private establishments in the district for 48 hours (May 19 and 20).

In view of the damage caused to railway tracks at several places, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has already suspended all trains from the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section to Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur and restoration work in the damaged areas.
