Rahul Gandhi To Visit Lakhimpur, Says Farmers Systematically Attacked’

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he along with CMs of Chhattisgarh and Punjab will try to visit the families hit by violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.

“The farmers in India are being attacked by the government for some time now; farmers are being crushed under a jeep, they are being killed. The name of BJP’s Minister of State for Home and his son is coming up in the incident but no action is being taken against them,” he said at a press conference.

“Farmers all over the country are being systematically attacked repeatedly; the First attack was reversing the land acquisition law and the second attack was these three new laws; What belongs to the farmers today is being snatched from them,” he added.

Gandhi, who has not been allowed to meet the families of farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kheri, said he would try to visit the violence-hit district along with Chhattisgarh and Punjab chief ministers Bhupesh Baghel and Charanjit Channi today.

He also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for visiting Lucknow for an event but not going to Lakhimpur Kheri. “Prime Minister was in Lucknow yesterday, but he could not go to Lakhimpur Kheri.”

“We are three people are going, Section 144 prohibits assembly of five people, 3 people can go under Section 144…We want to go there and see and understand the situation; want to support the family. Only we are being stopped and other parties are being allowed to go. What mistake have we made?” the Congress leader added.

Eight people, including four farmers, lost their lives after a farmer protest in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district turned violent on Sunday. Two SUVs were also set on fire by agitated farmers in the clash near Banbirpur.

The farmers have alleged that Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra was in one of the cars which they claimed knocked down some protesters who were opposing the Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to the district. However, the minister said that he and his son were not present at the spot and that he has photo and video evidence to prove it.

Lucknow Police Commissioner DK Thakur said that Gandhi will not be allowed to come as his visit to Lakhimpur Kheri might create problems, PTI reported.
