Rahul’s Account Locked, Post Revealing Identity Of Rape Victim’s Family Removed: Twitter

Mumbai: Twitter has informed Delhi High Court that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s tweet revealing the identity of the alleged nine-year-old rape-murder victim’s family in Delhi violated its policy.

“We have already removed that tweet and his Twitter account is also been locked,” the microblogging site said.

Makrand Suresh Mhadlekar, who claims to be a social worker, filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to direct the Delhi Police to register an FIR against Rahul Gandhi under section of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Twitter was responding to the PIL and elaborating upon the action taken by it against Gandhi for his tweet.

Last week, Twitter suspended Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter handle after he tweeted a photograph showing the kin of a nine-year-old Dalit girl who was allegedly raped in the national capital. “Shri @RahulGandhi’s Twitter account has been temporarily suspended & due process is being followed for its restoration,” the Congress party said in a tweet.

The party said that due process is being followed to restore the suspended account. Posting a picture after meeting the parents of the victim, Gandhi had said- ‘Tears of parents are saying the same thing – Tears of parents are saying the same thing – their daughter, the daughter of this country, deserves justice. And I am with them on this path to justice.”

The NCPCR had approached Delhi Police and Twitter to take action against Gandhi under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, which bans disclosure of the identity of rape victims and their family members.

Gandhi had met the family members of the Dalit girl last Wednesday and said that he was with them on the path of justice.
