Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Convict Nalini Attempts Suicide In Vellore Prison

Mumbai: Nalini Sriharan, convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case, allegedly attempted suicide inside the Vellore Women’s Jail on Monday night.

Advocate P Puglenthi told ANI, “Last night we got information that Nalini attempted to commit suicide in jail. Immediately we questioned the police and jail officials. They said the information is correct.”

Pugalenthi was allegedly tortured by the jail authorities and urged the authorities and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to shift Nalini to another jail, threatening her life.

“Authorities said that a criminal had given a verbal complaint against Nalini. At 8:30 pm, the jailer went to Nalini’s cell and inquired about the complaint. During the investigation, there was a fight between the jailer and Nalini. She got upset and. Attempted suicide, “said Puglenthi.

“This is the approach of the authorities. However, we do not believe it. He has served the last 30 years in prison and has never attempted to take such steps. It is not credible. I think she was tortured by the authorities,” he added.

Nalini and six others were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. In May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu by a suicide bomber. 14 other people were also killed in this attack.
