Rape-Accused BSP MP Atul Rai Surrenders In Court

Mumbai: Newly elected Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Atul Rai, who has been accused of rape, surrendered in a court here on Saturday.

BSP candidate Rai from Ghosi seat of Mau district went missing after the FIR was lodged against him.

On May 1, a college student filed an FIR against Rai, who had alleged that he took her home on the pretext of meeting his wife but sexually abused her.

The judicial magistrate (first) remanded Rai in 14-days judicial custody.

The parliamentarian from the Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh was declared absconder by the local court.

“We are campaigning for him and the people of Ghosi know that he is being framed. We apprehend that he may be arrested if he comes here for campaigning,” a Rai supporter had said.

Apart from this, BSP supremo Mayawati also asked her cadres to continue the campaign for opinion, whom she believed that she was framed by her political rivals. Mayawati also addressed a meeting in support of Rai in Ghosi.

After being declared elected, Rai did not turn to the post of Parliament and to take the oath of the police, at the beginning of this week, got permission from the court to attach his property.

The Supreme Court had on May 27 refused to grant Rai protection from arrest in the rape case while noting that 16 other criminal cases were pending against him.
