RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya Resigns 6-Months Before His Term Ends

Mumbai: Six months before his term ends RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya declared his resignation.

Viral was the youngest deputy governor post economic liberalization who took charge from January 23, 2017.

It comes a day after the monetary policy meeting, in which Acharya had strongly disagreed with Governor Das on the state of fiscal deficit. Although Das had said that in the event of fiscal deficit, borrowing the state-run enterprises was unfair to the club, Acharya said that for the total loss the public sector undertakings need to borrow.

Acharya is the recipient of Alexandre Lamfalussy Senior Research Fellowship of the Bank of International Settlements for 2017 and in 2011 Banque de France and Toulouse School of Economics Jr. Award in Monetary Economics and Finance.

Acharya had completed his BTech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Mumbai in 1995. He has in finance from NYU–Stern in 2001.

Before joining Stern, Acharya was at London Business School (2001–2008), the Academic Director of the Coller Institute of Private Equity at LBS (2007–09) and a Senior Houblon–Normal Research Fellow at the Bank of England (Summer 2008).
