Rekha Gupta Named Delhi’s New Chief Minister, Set to Take Oath on Thursday

Mumbai: Ending weeks of speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday named first-time MLA Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. Once she takes the oath, Gupta will become the fourth woman to hold the position in Delhi under the BJP and the ninth woman ever to serve as Chief Minister in the capital. At 50, she will also be the only sitting female Chief Minister in India besides West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee.

A Seasoned Political Career

An experienced BJP leader, Rekha Gupta has a long-standing association with the party. Currently serving as the general secretary of the Delhi BJP, she has also held the position of national vice president of BJP’s Mahila Morcha. Gupta emerged victorious in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Election from the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) constituency, securing 68,200 votes.

A lawyer by profession, her political journey began as the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996. She later transitioned into municipal politics, winning the Delhi Councillor elections from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and securing re-election in 2012. Gupta has also served as the Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Unanimous Selection by BJP Legislature Party

The decision to appoint Gupta came after a meeting of the Delhi BJP legislature party, where all 48 newly-elected legislators unanimously endorsed her leadership. The proposal was put forward by senior BJP leaders Parvesh Verma, Satish Upadhyay, and Vijender Gupta. Earlier in the day, the BJP’s parliamentary board convened at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, appointing senior leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and OP Dhankar as central observers to oversee the selection process.

Swearing-in Ceremony at Ramlila Maidan

Rekha Gupta is set to take the oath of office at a grand ceremony scheduled for 12:35 PM on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan. The event is expected to be attended by top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and other prominent figures from business and culture.

This marks the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years. The last BJP Chief Minister of Delhi was Sushma Swaraj, who held office in 1998 for a brief tenure of 69 days. The party secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats.

Challenges and Priorities for the New Government

The incoming BJP government faces high expectations, having made several ambitious promises during its election campaign. Among the top commitments is the disbursement of Rs 2,500 to eligible women beneficiaries by March 8, International Women’s Day.

“We have pledged to give Rs 2,500 to our sisters … this guarantee will be fulfilled because it is Modi’s guarantee,” Prime Minister Modi had assured during a campaign speech.

Infrastructure development, including improvements to Delhi’s roads and public transport, as well as the cleaning of the Yamuna River, are also set to be top priorities. The new administration will be under close scrutiny as it works to deliver on its electoral promises and usher in a new era of governance for the national capital.

With Rekha Gupta at the helm, the BJP aims to restore its presence in Delhi’s political landscape and deliver on its vision for the city’s future.
