Reports: BJP Leader And Rajasthan MP On Birla To Become Lok Sabha Speaker

Mumbai: BJP’s Rajasthan MP Om Birla is ready to be the of the Speaker 17th Lok Sabha, the report said on Tuesday. According to media reports, it said that Birla was named by BJP President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

However, on being asked if he was NDA candidate for post the of Lok Sabha Speaker, as he left the residence of BJP National Working President J P Nadda, Birla said, “I have no information, I had just gone to meet the Working President as a ‘karyakarta’.”

Meanwhile, responding to the news, Birla’s wife Amita said, “This is a very proud moment for us. We are very grateful to the Cabinet for choosing them.”

Birla was a three-time Member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kota South. He won for the 17th Lok Sabha for the second times from Kota Parliamentary Constituency.

Om Birla fought the Kota South in his first assembly election in 2003. He defeated Shanti Dhariwal by Congress with 10,101 votes. In the next assembly elections, he defended his nearest Congress candidate Ram Kishan Verma from Congress in 2008 with a comfortable difference of 24,300 votes.

Before becoming a member of Parliament, he won his third assembly election against Pankaj Mehta (Congress) in 50,000 votes in 2013. During his tenure in 2003-08, he was the Parliamentary Secretary (MoS rank) of Rajasthan Government.

Birla won Lok Sabha elections from Kota-Bundi constituency against Ramnarayan Meena of Congress by a margin of 2,79,677 votes.
