Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami Seeks Stay To Probe By Mumbai Police In TRP Scam

Mumbai: Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami on Tuesday moved the Bombay High Court seeking a stay on further investigation by the Mumbai Police in the alleged Television Rating Points (TRP) manipulation scam.

The petition filed by Republic TV owner Goswami and ARG Outlier Media also alleged that one of the firm’s employees was tortured in custody by the police.

It allegedly demanded protection for all employees from the “malicious witch hunt” being carried out by Maharashtra authorities.

Ghanshyam Singh, Republic TV’s “Assistant Vice President, Distribution”, was arrested on 10 November and “tortured, beaten and harassed in custody”, it alleged. Singh was given bail last week.

The police acted to “unfairly implicate” Goswami and others in a “premeditated manner” from the ARG media to “influence witnesses, and extract false statements against petitioners”.

TRP, measured by recording viewership data at sample households, is crucial for attracting advertisers.

As per the police, some of these households were being bribed to tune into Republic TV and a few other channels. Republic TV has denied wrongdoing.
