Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Legacy
With this triumph, Rohit became only the second Indian captain to win two ICC trophies, following in the footsteps of MS Dhoni. Under his leadership, India also lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Before Rohit, Dhoni (3), Sourav Ganguly (1), and Kapil Dev (1) had led India to ICC tournament victories.
Rohit also became the first captain in cricket history to lead his team to the final of all four major ICC events:
- World Test Championship 2023 (Runner-up)
- ODI World Cup 2023 (Runner-up)
- T20 World Cup 2024 (Champion)
- Champions Trophy 2025 (Champion)
A Captain’s Knock
Rohit led from the front with a sublime 76 off 83 balls, laced with seven fours and three sixes. He set the tone early, smashing a trademark pull shot for six off his second delivery against Kyle Jamieson. His half-century came in 41 balls, marking his first 50-plus score in an ICC event final.
After his dismissal in the 27th over, India found themselves in a tricky position at 122/3. However, a vital 61-run stand between Shreyas Iyer (48 off 62) and Axar Patel (29 off 40) steadied the innings. Despite losing wickets, KL Rahul (34 off 33), Hardik Pandya (18 off 18), and Ravindra Jadeja (9 off 6)** ensured India crossed the finish line.
India’s Bowling Effort
Earlier, India’s disciplined bowling effort restricted New Zealand to 251 all out. The bowling unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, kept the Kiwi batters in check, setting up a manageable chase.
A Historic Triumph
With this victory, India claimed their third ICC Champions Trophy title, adding to their triumphs in 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and 2013. More importantly, Rohit Sharma’s leadership has ushered in a new era of dominance in world cricket, securing back-to-back ICC titles for the first time in India’s history.
Celebrations and Reactions
The Indian team erupted in joy as Jadeja struck the winning runs, sparking wild celebrations in the dressing room. Cricket fans across the country took to the streets to celebrate the momentous victory, while social media was flooded with congratulatory messages for Rohit and his team.
With this win, India has firmly re-established itself as a powerhouse in world cricket, setting the stage for further glory in the years to come.
