Rohit Sharma Named Team India’s New Full-Time Test Captain

Mumbai: The BCCI today named Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new full-time Test captain. This comes after Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain following a 1-2 series defeat against South Africa.

Rohit will now be India’s all-format captain, having earlier replaced Kohli as ODI and T20I captain. The premier batsman had earlier replaced Kohli as Team India’s full-time captain in the limited-overs format ahead of the South Africa tour.

Rohit, who had earlier replaced Kohli as India’s T20I captain, missed the entire One Day International (ODI) and Test series against hosts, South Africa, due to a hamstring injury.

Rohit made his first appearance as India’s full-time captain in the 50-over format during the West Indies tour of India. The 34-year-old was appointed Kohli’s deputy in Test cricket at that time.

After India’s 2-1 loss at the hands of the Proteas in India’s tour of South Africa, batting icon Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Asian giants in the longest format. Kohli resigned from the Test captaincy after becoming the most successful captain of the Indian team in the longest and oldest format of the game.

Hence, many experts agreed that KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should play the role. Nonetheless, the BCCI has shown its faith in Rohit, who has been a proven captain in white-ball cricket.

However, he is yet to play a leadership role in Test matches. Meanwhile, it also means that Rohit is now the captain of all formats of India and there are a lot of expectations from him.

As far as Rohit’s predecessor is concerned, Kohli is an important part of the national team across all formats. Notably, the first Test, to be held in Mohali, will mark Kohli’s 100th appearance in the format and the 33-year-old would like to celebrate the occasion with a special knock.

India’s Test squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Mayank Agarwal, Priyank Panchal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas, Hanuma Vihari, Gill, Rishabh Pant, KS Bharat, Ashwin (subject to fitness), Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, Kuldeep, Bumrah (VC), Shami, Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Sourabh Kumar.
