Mumbai: Rohit Sharma will lead India in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, as confirmed by Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah.
During the address he shared at the naming ceremony for Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, Shah talked about the disappointment of the ODI World Cup the previous year but expressed optimism that Rohit will eventually end the team’s quest for the ICC trophy this year.
“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” said Shah.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the men’s senior selection committee, coach Rahul Dravid, and India captain Rohit were there when Shah made his remarks.
Rahul Dravid would lead the Indian team until the T20 World Cup, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah further stated during the function. Hardik Pandya will serve as the tournament’s vice captain, he continued.
The BCCI secretary Jay Shah added, “Rohit was captaining (in the past and other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series, which means we were going to let him continue forward.”
It had been 14 months since Rohit Sharma had appeared in a T20I match. But he did revert to the format for the series against Afghanistan in January. The captain, who had conceded two wickets in the first two games, recovered well to record his fifth century in the format in the third game. Additionally, he scored 13 in the first and 11 in the second to help India win when the game came down to a double Super-Over.
“When Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy? In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India was 22/4 and the way he took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right? He has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins,” said Shah.
Beginning on June 1, the United States of America and the West Indies will jointly host the T20 World Cup 2024. On June 5 in New York, the Indian team will open the tournament against Ireland. India is in Group A together with Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and the United States of America. The two best teams will advance to the Super-Eights.
