S Jaishankar Takes Oath As Rajya Sabha Member

Mumbai: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat last week, was sworn in as a member of the Upper House on Monday.

After returning to power in May 2019, former Prime Minister Subramanian Jayashankar Krishnaswamy was appointed Foreign Minister.

“In passing away of Shri Sudarshan Agarwal, the country has lost a noted constitutional expert, an able officer and a dedicated social worker,” he said.

In the first term of the Modi government, Foreign Secretary Jayashankar chose the Upper House from Gujarat in the by-election last week for two vacancies made after the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani. Which were elected to the Lok Sabha in the general elections.

Jaishankar is the son of late K Subrahmanyam, one of India’s leading strategic analysts.

Shah was present in the House when Jaishankar took the oath.

The 1977-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer took oath in English after which he greeted the Chairman and other members present in the House.
