Sabarmati River Clean-Up Drive Begins

Mumbai: In recent developments, a campaign to clean the polluted Sabarmati river in Gujarat was started on Wednesday to mark World Environment Day.

Sabarmati is one of the most rivers in the country, under the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB’s) National Water Quality Programme.

The drive will continue till June 9.

The ‘Swachh Sabarmati Maha campaign’ (Sabarmati river cleansing campaign) was started by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani from the river bank near the historic Sabarmati Ashram.

“On World Environment Day, we started the Sabarmati Sanction Campaign. Sabarmati is a historic river, and this kind of campaign is being done for the first time in many years. Due to the initiative of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, people have done this. Thousands of people came out to participate in the cleanliness campaign, “the chief minister told reporters.

He said that during the drive the river water will be free of pollutants. “Sabarmati flows as a clean river after the monsoon,” said CM.

Rupani also participated in cleaning a part of the riverbed, which has almost dried up across the riverfront.

On Wednesday, thousands of citizens participated in the drive to clean the stretch between Daphna and Lust barrage in Ahmedabad.

According to a CPCB report on the basis of biological oxygen demand, Sabarmati river is one of the most polluted rivers in the country. It is one of the top three polluted rivers of Gujarat, the other two are Amlakhari and Khadi.
