SC Grants Bail To P Chidambaram, To Be Released From Jail After Spending 105 Days In Custody

Mumbai: In a huge development in INX Media Case, the Supreme Court has granted bail to the former finance minister and Congress senior leader P Chidambaram.

After 106 days, the Congress leader will be finally stepping out of the Tihar jail.

The hearing was attended by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta as senior counsel Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Salman Khurshid. Justice Bopanna pronounced the judgment saying, “There is a need to keep the crime seriously. The seriousness of a crime has to be gathered from the facts and circumstances of each case. “

The bench said that the Delhi High Court, in its order denying bail, had upheld the advertisement for the seriousness of the offense. The court has imposed certain conditions on Chidambaram that he will have to cooperate in the investigation and he will not be able to give any statement to the press. They have also been directed not to travel abroad to influence the evidence in the case or to influence witnesses.

During the arguments, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed in the apex court that the 74-year-old former finance minister from custody also wanted to release “substantial influence” on the key witnesses in the case, while stating that the agency’s career and reputation by making baseless allegations Cannot “destroy”.

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and AM Singhvi, representing the former Union Finance Minister, counted Mr. Mehta’s presentations and said that P.W. There was no evidence directly or indirectly linking Chidambaram to the alleged crime nor was there any material to show whether he influenced the witnesses or tampered with any evidence.

P Chidambaram was first arrested by the CBI in the INX Media corruption case on August 21 and was granted bail by the apex court on October 22. He was arrested by the ED on October 16 in a money laundering case.

The CBI filed a case on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the FIPB withdrawal granted to INX Media Group to receive foreign funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Mr. Chidambaram’s tenure as Finance Minister.

Subsequently, the ED had filed a money laundering case.
