SC Issues Notice To Bengal Govt For Delay In Release Of BJP Member

Mumbai: Supreme court issues notice to Mamata Banerjee and her government for delaying the release of BJP member Priyanka Sharma from jail.

Sharma was arrested for sharing the photograph of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and in spite of the jail’s instructions, the top court had delayed her saying that she would be “immediately freed”.

Sharma was released on May 15, but Morford refused to apologize for photographing.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi issued a notice to the state government and others on the contempt plea filed by Rakesh Sharma, brother of the activist. Senior advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul, who represented Rajiv, said that although Priyanka was granted bail on May 14, she was not released.

On Monday, when the state attorney mentioned the prison manual, the apex court said, “The order of the Supreme Court can not be the prerogative of the prison manual.”

“It has not been done. First of all, the arrest was primarily arbitrary, “the bench said and warned of contempt proceedings. Rajib’s counsel asked that the state has what authority and police should keep it in custody for a minute even after the order of the apex court.

Priyanka said, “I will fight this case. I will not apologize for a mem … I was kept in custody for 18 hours even after being granted bail … They did not allow me to meet my lawyer and family. They promptly asked me to apologize. I was tortured in jail. The prison staff pushed me as if I was a criminal.”
