SC Refuses To Pass Order on Plea Seeking Security For Govt Hospital Doctors

Mumbai: After strike called off by AIIMS in West Bengal, Supreme Court has rejected to pass any order on a petition seeking security for doctors in government hospitals. The apex court directed the matter to be listed before an appropriate bench after vacation.

Now it has been said that the doctors had stopped their strike in West Bengal and other states, there was no urgency to hear the petition immediately. It also refused to issue a notice to the Center, but it says that it is opening up the big issue of security for medical professionals.

On Monday, Justice Deepak Gupta and the vacation bench of Suryakant had agreed to list the case after demanding an immediate hearing from Srivastava.

In view of protests by doctors in West Bengal, a petition was filed against a group of relatives of the patient allegedly assaulting his colleagues on June 10 in NRS hospital at Kolkata.

In the petition, there has been a demand for directing the Union Home Ministry and health and West Bengal for the deployment of security personnel appointed by the government in all government hospitals for safety and security of doctors.

“According to the study conducted by the IMA, more than 75% of doctors across the country have faced violence in some form or the other. This study concluded that 50% of the violent incidents occurred in the intensive care unit of hospitals and in 70% of cases, the patients’ relatives were actively involved.”

Junior Doctors in West Bengal were on strike since June 11, after the attack on their colleagues in Kolkata demanded better security at the workplace.
