Shaheen Bagh Protesters Will Have To Follow Ban On Gathering: Kejriwal

Mumbai: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday that the restrictions being put in place to prevent the mobilization of more than 50 people in Delhi would cover protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Shaheed Bagh.

While briefing the media here Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “This will be applicable for all. Whether it is a protest or anything else, people will have to follow it.”

The Shaheen Bagh protesters, who have completed three months of their agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), have said they will continue their protest by taking necessary health precautions.

His announcement came despite advice to avoid public gatherings to control the spread of Kovid-19. So far, only seven confirmed cases have been confirmed in Delhi, including two patients who have been recovered and discharged. One of the 68-year-old women died last week.

The Delhi government last Friday ordered a ban on any gathering of more than 200 people, including sporting events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL). Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had asked people to avoid public ceremonies and maintain “social disturbances” as preventive measures.

The government has also shut all cinema halls, schools and colleges till March 31.

Hundreds of people have blocked the arterial road number 13A at Shaheen Bagh from December 15, 2019, in protest against the Citizenship Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

They have refused to vacate the opportunity until the CAA is repealed.

The amended Act provides for faster citizenship for people belonging to non-Muslim minorities of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014.

The law to be based on exclusion and religion has been challenged in the Supreme Court and has resulted in widespread opposition across India.
