Shreyas Iyer Smashes Hundred On His Test Debut

Mumbai: Batter Shreyas Iyer smashed a hundred on his Test debut, reaching the three-figure mark off 157 deliveries in the first innings against New Zealand in the Kanpur Test.

The 26-year-old became the 16th Indian cricketer to slam a hundred on Test debut.

Iyer remained unbeaten on 75 on the first day. In the morning session on the second day, he continued his good form and did not take long to add 25 more runs to his total.

Among some of the biggest names to have scored a hundred on Test debut are Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Shikhar Dhawan.

The 26-year-old Iyer made his ODI and T20I debut in 2017 but had to wait a long time to get his maiden Test cap. However, the Delhi Capitals batsman has excellent numbers against his name in first-class cricket. He has scored 4592 runs in the domestic circuit in white at an average of 52.18 with 12 centuries and 23 fifties.

Iyer’s rise in Indian cricket has been spectacular in the last 2-3 years. The middle-order batsman led his Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals to the finals of IPL 2020. Injury issues prevented Iyer from making it into the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2021, but he was among the reserves.

Iyer returned to the team with a 3-match T20I series against the Kiwis, which was preceded by a 2-match Test series. He then earned his first Test appearance in the longest format at Kanpur, with the legendary Sunil Gavaskar handing him the cap before the start of the game.

With Iyer now registering a century to his name, it would be interesting to see who would make way from the playing XI when skipper Virat Kohli marks his return for the 2nd Test in Mumbai.
