Shweta Basu Prasad Opens Up About Being Bullied on a Film Set

Mumbai: Actress Shweta Basu Prasad recently shared her experience of being ‘bullied’ on a Telugu film set due to her height. In a candid conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Shweta revealed that the constant remarks about her stature made her time on the set difficult and emotionally draining.

Height-Based Bullying on Set

Recalling the incident, Shweta explained that her co-star was significantly taller than her, standing at nearly 6 feet, while she is only 5’2. The crew would frequently comment on their height difference, making her feel uncomfortable and singled out.

“The entire crew every day would remind me of my height. Because my hero was quite tall. I’m 5’2, and my co-actor was 5’11 or almost 6 feet tall. It was the only set where I was really bullied, and it was very bad,” she admitted.

Expressing her frustration, the actress pointed out that height is a genetic trait, something beyond her control. Despite her challenges, she continued to give her best performance.

Unfair Criticism and Double Standards

Without naming anyone, Shweta also mentioned that her co-star, despite being a native Telugu speaker, struggled with delivering his lines, leading to multiple retakes. However, she found it unfair that while she was being criticized for her height, no one held her co-star accountable for his performance lapses.

“Even I wasn’t fluent in Telugu, but I managed. Meanwhile, he, being a Telugu speaker, couldn’t get his lines right. Yet, no one called him out for it,” she stated.

Shweta Basu Prasad’s Career

Shweta made her Telugu film debut with Kotha Bangaru Lokam in 2008 and later appeared in movies such as Ride, Kasko, Kalavar King, Priyudu, and Genius. Her last Telugu film was Vijeta, which was released in 2016.

Apart from Telugu cinema, Shweta has also had a distinguished career in Hindi films and television, starring in critically acclaimed projects like Makdee, Iqbal, Serious Men, and India Lockdown.

Her revelations highlight the challenges that actors, especially women, often face in the film industry, shedding light on the need for a more inclusive and respectful work environment.
