Sitaram Yechury, D Raja Detained At Srinagar, Party Calls It Illegal
Mumbai: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) called the detention of their general secretary Sitaram Yechury and his companion D. Raja as illegal. As per the party, the general secretary of CPI(M) had already sent a letter to the governor of Jammu and Kashmir state the day and reason for his arrival. There was nothing illegal in Yechury’s arrival.
Mr Yechury had travelled to J&K in order to meet the CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yusif Tarigami and members of party’s unit present there. It was reported that the left leader would be sent back to Delhi later. The CPI(M) in a tweet had called the detention illegal by stating in the tweet that Mr Yechury had informed the administration before arriving.
“Sitaram Yechury has been detained at Srinagar Airport and not allowed to move anywhere. This despite the fact that he had informed the administration about his visit to meet CPI(M) MLA Mr Tarigami who is not well and other party workers. We strongly protest this illegal detention,”
Mr Yechury in his letter has written, “The Communist Party of India (Marxist ) has an active unit in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and it has an MLA, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami in the dissolved J&K assembly and other members of the party. I propose to reach Srinagar on 9th August morning to meet them. I hope the administration will not create any hurdles in discharging my responsibilities as a leader of my party.”
In an interview with PTI Yechury said, “They showed us legal orders which did not allow any entry into Srinagar. It stated that even escorted movement in the city was not allowed due to security reasons. We are still trying to negotiate them”
On 8th August Senior Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad was also detained at Srinagar airport. He had arrived there to hold a meeting with the Congress Leaders about the revocation of article 370.
