‘Situation Is Critical, People Are Advised Not To Come To Delhi’, Supreme Court On Delhi Pollution

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Monday came to dominate the Center and the Delhi government as the national capital and its surrounding areas are struggling to breathe after the deterioration of air quality with each passing day.

Taking a report on pollution caused by stubble-burning by the Environmental Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), a bench of the apex court stated that ‘the buck is passing’ and things cannot go on like this.

The apex court said that pollution in the NCR region is a serious matter. Hearing the petition, Justice Arun Mishra questioned the government as to why Delhi is choking every year.

The court said that the right to breathe and access to clean air is a fundamental right of every citizen. The top court also said that defective play on this issue cannot last long.

The SC further said, “People are advised not to come to Delhi, or leave Delhi. We are making a mockery of everything. It became too much. This is not the way we can live. The Center should do it… The state should do it. The situation is critical, what do you want to do as Center and Delhi?

Expressing his helplessness, Amicus Curia informed the court that the sewage burning was still prevalent in the areas around Delhi. Farmers were blamed in western UP, Haryana, Punjab as the main culprits for debris burning and subsequent pollution.

The apex court also pulled up the Punjab government for not taking adequate measures to prevent stubble burning. The court also said that although Punjab is a rice bowl of the country, it cannot be allowed to poison the air through burning faeces.

The court has directed both the Center and the Delhi government to take measures to reduce pollution.
